IYENGAR YOGA
We have just launched our new Website! For Yoga Classes, Workshops and Retreats please visit www.somorethanyoga.co.uk
Iyengar Yoga is now the most widely practised in the world, mainly through the teaching of B.K.S. Iyengar.
Regular practice increases suppleness, strength and stamina, improves posture and concentration and quietens the mind to promote well-being.
The emphasis of Iyengar Yoga is on precision and alignment. You learn to move with ease in your body within your own limitations.
Postures are held for longer than in other styles, allowing tight muscles to lengthen and relax, and helps to focus on awareness. Props such as blankets, blocks and belts may be used to improve understanding and awareness of how the body responds within the pose.
The practice is progressive, aiming to build a stable foundation before attempting more advanced postures. Each group of postures develops the body in different yet reciprocal ways and has different qualities: grounding, energising, strengthening, stimulating and calming. All classes devote time to savasana (relaxation). Once the body and mind are strong enough to sit or lie for extended periods without distraction, students learn pranayama (yogic breathing).
